ECTS, a bridge between the European institutions of higher education
Next to the courses and their descriptions one can distinguish ECTS credits. What are ECTS credits?
The abbreviation ECTS stands for "European Community Course Credit Transfer System". The ECTS was introduced as a pilot scheme within the frame of the ERASMUS Program (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). One of the main aims of ERASMUS is the promotion of academic recognition beyond national borders, facilitating students to pursue part of their study program abroad. The objective of the E.U. is to open the borders of national isolation and to demolish the walls of prejudice separating us from the other peoples of Europe, through contact with the other cultures.
The ECTS has been introduced all over Europe safeguarding academic recognition of studies abroad by allowing students to move among higher education institutions in a unified Europe.
ECTS credits are expressed in terms of numbers ranging from 1 to 60 allocated to course units establishing the student workload to fulfil the requirements of a given course. The ECTS credits reflect the work to be invested into each course compared to the total quantity of work necessary to meet the requirements of one full year of academic study at the institutions. Within the ECTS 60 credits equal the workload of an academic year of study and normally 30 credits of one semester.
Practically, that means that a student from our institution can transfer to any other university in Europe and gain credits taken into account by the home institution.
